SUMMARY:Sustainable and Equitable Funding for Pedestrian Infrastructure Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Walking as a means of transportation has health\, environmental\, and economic benefits. Well-maintained sidewalks are important for communities to meet their active travel goals. But pedestrian infrastructure in many communities is discontinuous\, inaccessible to those with physical disabilities\, and poorly maintained – particularly in lower-income neighborhoods. The availability of an adequate\, sustainable\, and equitable source of funding is a major challenge for maintaining sidewalks in a state of good repair.  Governments across the nation maintain and repair roads and highways\, but most cities require adjacent property owners to maintain the sidewalks. In this presentation\, researchers will share findings from separate studies regarding alternative approaches for funding sidewalk infrastructure and whether these approaches could lead to more sustainable and equitable outcomes when applied to the cities of Atlanta\, Georgia and Albuquerque\, New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Winning Transit: The Cincinnati Story
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here \nEighteen years ago\, voters in greater Cincinnati rejected a proposal to expand the region’s transit system by more than 2 to 1. This spring\, the votes told a very different story: A measure to expand Cincinnati transit service captured a majority of votes in Hamilton County\, even with most of the ballots cast during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. \nWhat changed between then and now? \nOne of the major differences is the emergence of the Better Bus Coalition. Founded in 2017 and led by Cam Hardy\, the Better Bus Coalition quickly established itself as a voice for Cincinnati bus riders\, winning improvements like better seating at bus stops and the city’s first dedicated bus lane. Those early victories made a tangible difference for riders while building credibility and relationships that would prove invaluable during the county-wide transit referendum campaign. \nTransit systems will face headwinds as a result of COVID-19\, but the Better Bus Coalition’s big win at the ballot box shows that savvy\, rider-focused advocacy can still prevail. Join Cam Hardy and TransitCenter Executive Director David Bragdon for a conversation about how transit advocates can build power and achieve major improvements for riders despite challenging political terrain. \nIn conversation: \nDavid Bragdon\, Executive Director\, TransitCenter \nCam Hardy\, President\, Better Bus Coalition \nPlease note: This is a webinar on Zoom. For security purposes\, only registered Zoom users will be able to RSVP. \nThe webinar begins at 3pm Eastern/12pm Pacific.

SUMMARY:Thinking Outside the Box: Urban Freight & Delivery During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Cities have seen a dramatic increase in the volume of freight and deliveries moving on their streets. Online retailers and delivery companies have seen nearly a 50 percent jump in orders over the past two months. With more people shopping online\, businesses are grappling with this surge in delivery trips and looking to find new ways to conduct contact-less deliveries to protect the health and safety of customers and employees. For cities who are working to organize and manage this new confluence of needs at the curb\, thoughtful planning and innovation are key to accommodating growing numbers of delivery vehicles while ensuring that people can keep their distance on sidewalks and curbsides. \nEfficient\, safe goods movement ensures that we all have access to essential items and services and is a critical part of our COVID-19 response and our long-term economic recovery. In this webinar\, we’ll hear from the Cities of Seattle and Toronto as well as UPS Canada about how cities and businesses have adjusted their approaches to freight and curbside management programs in the wake of the current pandemic. \nThursday\, June 4 | 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT \nModerators:\nSindhu Bharadwaj\, Policy Associate\, NACTO\nJanelle Lee\, Analyst\, Pembina Institute \nPanelists:\nMary Catherine Snyder\, Parking Strategic Advisor\, City of Seattle\nNazzareno Capano\, Manager of Transportation Policy & Innovation\, City of Toronto\nAylin Lusi\, Vice President of Public Affairs\, UPS Canada \nRegister – Zoom\n(must register in advance) \nThis webinar is co-hosted by NACTO and the Pembina Institute. \nThis webinar is a resource of the NACTO COVID-19 Transportation Response Center\, part of Bloomberg Philanthropies COVID-19 Local Response Initiative.

SUMMARY:Responding to COVID-19: From Fixed Routes to Flex Routes
DESCRIPTION:In light of steep declines in transit ridership and municipal budgets as a result of COVID-19\, transit providers are rapidly becoming more reactive and nimble in their offerings. This has included adjusting and reducing fixed route services to provide for essential workers\, but also limiting routes with empty buses. Transit providers have been tasked with the challenge of how to maintain service for frontline workers in a reliable and safe fashion during this time of uncertainty. With a slow and prolonged reopening across the country\, these solutions will also become essential for the workforce that are able to return to work by means of transit. \nTo support cities and businesses in their efforts to provide transportation for their riders\, Ford Mobility subsidiaries TransLoc\, Ride Systems and DoubleMap are providing free transit consulting and demand response software for transit agencies in an effort to help them quickly deploy a responsive service that can both support evolving rider demand\, and adhere to quickly-changing health guidelines. \nJoining Alex Gibson from TransLoc\, we will hear from Josh Powers who is serving as a member of the County Manager’s Office and is the contract administrator and regional transit liaison between Johnson County Government and the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). Josh brings a unique perspective as he shares insights from service changes and the re-utilization of infrastructure\, to creative ways to avoid driver layoffs and the allocation of resources with CARE Act funding. \nOffering expertise in reactive transit planning\, powered by demand response software\, TransLoc\, Ride Systems and DoubleMap are working with agencies to offer on-demand services that help to minimize losses associated with drops in ridership\, while continuing to provide mission-critical service. Beyond offering access to demand response software\, Ford Mobility’s transit innovators are offering essential transit planning support during this time of uncertainty.

SUMMARY:The Fix for Busted Transit Funding
DESCRIPTION:Click here to watch a recording of the event. \nThis talk is part of TransitCenter’s “Transit and COVID-19: The Online Event Series” \nMoney from the federal CARES Act is making its way to transit agencies around the country\, providing badly needed financial breathing room so that public transportation systems can afford to operate the frequent service needed to safely move essential workers and people making essential trips. \nBut at many agencies\, the federal money may only last a few months. That’s because many transit agencies rely on revenue from passenger fares and taxes and fees that are drying up as people reduce their travel and the economy slips into a downturn. Many of these funding sources were regressive to begin with\, and are proving fragile in this crisis. \nSeattle bore the early brunt of COVID-19\, and is also one of the places where relief funds will go the least far. Katie Wilson of the Seattle Transit Riders Union has written incisively about how the region’s over-reliance on sales tax revenue has put transit in a shaky foundation—a lesson that is relevant not just for Seattle but across the country. Join Wilson and TransitCenter’s Steven Higashide for a conversation about how to put this essential service on financially resilient footing\, both now and after the crisis. \nPlease note: This is a webinar on Zoom. For security purposes\, only registered Zoom users will be able to RSVP. \nOnce you RSVP for the event on Zoom\, you will be sent an email with a unique URL to join the online event on Wednesday\, April 29th. \nThis event will be closed-captioned.

SUMMARY:OK VROOMER: MILLENNIALS AND CAR CULTURE
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will discuss how for many people\, owning and using a car symbolizes social status and personal image and how this symbolic value reinforces car consumption. In addition\, we will discuss the key differences between age and generational effects and the tools that are needed to disentangle them. Lastly\, we will then summarize recent findings on whether or not Millennials truly differ from previous generations in terms of their car ownership and use\, as well as Millennial attitudes toward cars and urban living. \nSpeakers:\nJoanna Moody\, Ph.D.\, Research Program Manager\, Mobility Systems Center\, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) \nBrianne Eby\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nJoanna Moody is the Research Program Manager for the MIT Energy Initiative’s Mobility Systems Center and a coordinating author of Insights into Future Mobility\, a new report culminated from MITEI’s three-year Mobility of the Future study. Joanna coordinates a team of multidisciplinary researchers exploring the future of the transportation sector in a decarbonizing world. Her research uses econometrics and psychometrics to explore the interactions between attitudes and individual travel behavior\, with a particular focus on understanding alternatives to private car ownership and use. \nDownload the Slides (Recording Currently Unavailable)
