WHY IS TRANSIT IMPORTANT?

  • Many citizens absolutely depend on public transit for most transportation needs.
  • Our research and outreach tells us that more people want to use transit, but limitations are taking transit out of their travel considerations.
  • Kansas Citians spend a disproportionate amount of income on transportation – almost all automobile oriented. With strong transit, families could reduce transportation expenses, diverting significant discretionary income to more productive uses.
  • Public transit is the most sustainable and efficient form of transportation. Effective public transit will reduce fossil fuel use, reduce air pollution, limit wasteful sprawl, and encourage denser urban patterns.
  • Access to dependable, convenient transit encourages economic development.
  • Continual building and maintenance of highways, roads, bridges, and streets is becoming problematic and unaffordable. The cost of gasoline is rising significantly. It is time to think of practical alternatives to the almost universal dependence on automobiles.
